Be kind when you can, unkind when you shouldn't
I don't think I can entirely get on board with pacifism. It's never been a part of my belief system. I never believed in cruelty for the sake of cruelty, either, if that's worth anything. What can I say? I was raised on a steady diet of Indiana Jones movies that taught me there was a Correct Way to deal with certain uniformed goons.
It can't all be punching fash, though, right? I want to play video games and spend time in the woods listening to birds. I want to see things grow.
Since anti-authoritarianism is more broadly in vogue, it's important to keep that in mind. What is the point of all the signs and the marches and perhaps A Little Crime if no one gets to play games or walk in the woods or do science or keep a garden afterwards? I'm signing up for a better world, not eternal warfare.
There's a lot of people who talk like it will be eternal warfare, though. I'm not discounting a lot of broken systems need to be fixed or swept aside entirely, but don't forget to stop for a moment and think about something other than torching a Cybertruck, as cathartic as that is. Catharsis is like a quick swig of water to keep you going, but you do need something nourishing ultimately to survive.
At the same time, I would like for you to know it's okay to be a jerk to those who have it coming. I think so many of us get too attached to the idea that a person is just one thing, is representative of a single ideal instead of being a complex person who behaves differently in many different situations. This already happens, it's just many try to hide that they are a multitude.
Hand in hand with this is, I feel, a lot of people don't exactly know how to be intentionally unkind, or not nice, or jerks. This is actually a skill that can be developed. You can get a sense for just how mad someone might get. Giving yourself an exit is always good to line up ahead of time. Drive-by meanness is a valid tactic, especially if it's low-grade, like laughing aloud at someone wearing a MAGA hat as you pass by. Really, the lower stakes it is, the more effective it ends up being. These guys dream of some grand confrontation where they can feel justified in throwing hands. A passing giggle can ruin their entire day and deny them the fight that they want to escalate to so badly, and if they want to make it into something more, ignore, exit, or alert someone of the escalation and see if you can get them kicked out.
Kindness takes many forms, and in this paradoxical instance, treating trash like trash is a kindness to the good people around you. The more comfortable fascists are being fascist in public, the worse it gets for everyone else. Think of it like a garden. Weeds should be unwelcome. Weeds should be pulled out at the earliest opportunity so that the plants that should be there can grow and be healthy without competing for nutrients.
Every one of us has a responsibility to tend to the gardens of society. Making sure everyone has enough sunlight and nutrients makes for a healthier, more vibrant garden. Looking the other way whenever a fuckwad in a Trump shirt and MAGA hat passes you by in a grocery store is seeing the weed, not touching the weed, and hoping it somehow goes away on its own, which is something weeds just do not do.
